An automatic gearbox and a manual gearbox accomplish exactly the same thing, but they do it in totally different ways. They differ in that the manual gearbox locks and unlocks different sets of gears to the output shaft to achieve the various gear ratios, whereas automatic gearboxes use the same set of gears to produce all of the different gear ratio's. Gear ratios are what allow a car to reach a high rate of speed or climb a steep hill. The device that makes this possible in an automatic gearbox is called the planetary gear set.
The planetary gear set is a gear system that consists of one or more outer gears, (planet gears), revolving about a central, or sun gear. Typically, the planet gears are mounted on a movable arm or carrier which itself may rotate relative to the sun gear.
Without a gearbox, cars would be limited to one gear. The ratio would have to be predetermined to allow the car to travel at the desired top speed. If you wanted a top speed of 80 mph the gear ratio would be similar to third gear, making it extremely difficult to just move your vehicle from stationary.
You would also notice virtually no acceleration present and the engine would be at full RPM at 80 mph. The vehicle would not last very long without a gearbox, making it all the more important that your vehicles gearbox, manual or automatic, is always maintained by a reputable company that specialises in gearboxes.
